Title: VC:MP Launcher
Post by: George on Feb 01, 2016, 07:38 AM
I don't know if I can post this here, however no one told me that I couldn't, so here it go.

As a competitor of the National Service for Industrial Training, I'm training to participate of the Knowledge Olympiad and hereafter participate of the WorldSkills... But that doesn't matter to you. What I'm trying to say is: On my training season I made an application which interacts with the internet, guess what? I made a VCMP Browser... yeah that's not big deal, but somehow I got excited with that and I've decided to turn it in something more... So without futher ado here's the result, I present to you the VC:MP Launcher!

Where is the download link? To avoid complications and misunderstandings I will wait a couple of hours for some developer post objections or anything that goes against the project be released to public.

So, Why did I post this anyway? I'm not good with "holding" things like that and I really like to make people of communities like this one happy and excited with tools that make the gameplay and interaction enjoyable and fun.

Finally the download is now available!
VC:MP Launcher.zip (http://vcmp.lbr-gang.com/download/VCMP_Launcher.zip)

*To use the application you need at least version 4.5.1 of the .NET Framework and Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015.
.NET Framework 4.5.1 (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40779)
Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145)  DOWNLOAD x86(32 bit).

*For security reasons, you need to register an account and do login in the launcher, that's required to store your friends list, history, favorites, nickname etc, and also for future features. Please provide a valid email address, that's way out to restore your password if you loses.

*Everytime you open the launcher, you have to wait a couple seconds until it loads every server from VC:MP's masterlist, this is needed because the launcher caches all informations required to not do that over again when you request.

OBS: If you don't want to register an account, so you have to wait until I release a basic version of the launcher.

Not sure if I was explicit enough liking the post but you have my personal approval at least, but as with all compiled programs here you'll have to provide source code for the browser.

I'd not like to. Don't take me wrong, I just don't want see copies of that with few little modifications and probably malicious codes.
I gladly give the source code to developer team to be analyzed or whatever you want, if that helps.

If you just upload an analysis of it to Virustotal that'd also be okay in this case. Frankly I trust you enough to not do anything stupid but it'd be nice to have everything be verifiably clean.

The "HEUR/QVM03.0.Malware.Gen" is a suspicious of the .NET WebClient class which I used in both applications. Some anti-virus has added it to whitelist but some doesn't.

Qihoo isn't really an established antivirus client so I'd let it slide since the other 52 clients said it was clean.

It is possible, but If anybody does that he will look nothing but a complete retard. I mean, this is the only VCMP forum everybody knows who is the real owner/scripter (or whatever you call it) of this VCMP launcher.
Or I guess, it will be dealth in private. ;)

It is an unofficial launcher and therefor I wont necessarily sticky this. Maybe change the title to [UNOFFICIAL] VC:MP Launcher or something similar and it might, if this actually gets open-source'd.

It looks nice. How fast is it compared to the official browser?
And does it handle launching, checking for updates, and installing updates as well?

If it actually remembers the username and game path then that's more then good for me. The official one always forgets those and I have to enter them manually on each start. Which is a pain in the a$$.

Not heard that bug before... I've not had to re-enter anything since I initially installed when it was in private testing..

I had to do that ever since I've known about VC:MP no mater the OS. XP, 7, 8, 10, x32/x64, admin/regular privileges, compatibility modes etc. you name it. I've tried it all. If I open the config files the values are there but when the browser starts... nothing. Not the first time I've complained about this.

If I have enough time, I would make one and open source. However, .NET can be decompile, so release the exe means release the source code. :P

All the 0.4 plugins are open-source and honestly it's made maintaining them so much easier. A bunch of bugfixes in Squirrel, for example, are thanks to community contributors finding and fixing issues.

We were also planning on making our own official refresh of the browser though that's been on the backburner for a while, so it's nice to have this in the interim.

Then why the official VCMP browser is not open-source?
Well, think of this, this browser is far more better than the official one. It is worthy to be the official one.

Unfortunately, the game connection is through the official browser because I don't know how exactly the vcmp injection is done, I've tried so many ways and doesn't worked. And the launcher doesn't update the vcmp client due to same thing, I don't know how it's done.

If Stormeus helps with that, it would be amazing and I'll be thankful.

Yes it is in same directory.
Please show me the details.

You're probably missing the proper .NET framework. Depending with which one the project was compiled against. Looked promising but being faced with a login page and a registration page on startup sure took the fun out of it. What if I don't have an internet connection and want to experiment with the local server? Shouldn't this be optional?

You need at least version 4.5.1 of the .NET Framework.

I do not like the fact it sends the password unencrypted/unhashed over a non https connection, along with your mac address.
Are passwords even properly hashed in your database?

Why is registering even needed? I don't see any function that would need an external party.

A non working VC:MP client are the least of their concerns if they still run XP. They should be shot for using such an old dated OS.

Say how exactly should be done, the search for friend, request system, accepting system, action system, all of this and more saving locally.
And about the MAC Address is to make the client's session safe.

You should compile the dll use static library. That it can work without the redistributable. Or you can use .NET to write it. So that it can built in the launcher.

You just add nicknames you want to follow to your local list of friends. When you open the browser it looks around in the servers for that nick and tells you if they're online. I don't see the problem.

The MAC Address is just bullsh*t and you probably know it.

That would involve simulating a VC:MP client. Which has been done by Stormeus for the VCDC prize bot, but isn't going to be made public for obvious reasons. Why not use IRC? :)

The launcher looks OK but I'm also not sure why MAC addresses need to be sent, or why passwords are sent in the clear over HTTP.

I'd be hesitant to add in-game chat to the browser for fear of it becoming MTA:VC where people just talk more and play less, especially considering most servers have IRC echoes.

Exactly...

Queries take a very short time to execute, they're just small UDP packets.

Yup, every time I tried. I'm using windows 10 .net 4.5. Also I know that you don't know how to deal with this stuff. (perhaps you do?)

Yeah! Please

And about the loading thing, yes, do it directly, please! It took about 10-15 seconds or more to load it. But the thing is, it loads all the servers in the masterlist which the official browser doesn't.

And yes, I can't see the server's ping be updated every time I click on them. In short: The ping is not getting updated/refreshed. Please fix that!

EDIT: How can we add favorites manually? I want to add a IP like: "babakakan.noip.me:8192" and not the IPv4 of the server. Please add that too!

When did you read Chemistry lol? I've read the ethane thing recently in 2015. Dunno about difluoro ethane :D
Dunno, I just liked its name so I researched it, a few weeks ago.
Its a refrigerant hydrofluorocarbon. Also another refrigerant with a similar name is difluoromethane. I've been trying to memorize its chemical formula and I got it now. C2H4F2

What's you mean? I don't get it.

Looks pretty nice George! Well done :) Did you make this with WinForms or XAML or something else? It looks like XAML to me but i could be wrong.

@Gulk I've looked into external chat from within a browser before (for both LU and VCMP) but it's not really worth the effort that it requires. MTS had it because the launcher actually handled the connection between the game and the server, including sending/receiving all the sync packets so adding chat there wasn't really hard (IIRC the ingame chat box reads directly from the launcher chat for its input).
To add this to VCMP you would need to establish a connection with the server seperately and implement the chat related packets, while it's possible if you know how the packets are, it's not that easy to do, especially in C#. Plus you'd have to disconnect the outgame client when launching the game otherwise you'd have 2 connections to the server.

Anyway, back to the main topic. Cool project George, keep it up :D

What @VRocker means is that with the current implementation of VC:MP you need to create a fake VC:MP client inside the Launcher that actually occupies a slot inside the server and if the server is full the launcher won't be able to connect. Which brings it's own kinds of issues to deal with.

The other alternative is to create a server module that binds to the port next to the main server port and use that communicate. Kinda like they do with IRC. Or you could even use IRC for that matter.

It's WinForms :P
XAML(WPF) takes a lot time to make an app like that and I really didn't have this time, that's why I chose WinForms xD

Thanks man! For sure I will keep working on it :D

Yeah, this would be nice... But just think how confusing it would be with servers which haven't this module.

Like @VRocker said. It's not worth the effort. Not to mention that it's easy to abuse by people.

@VRocker I think is unnecessary to make browser supports chat. I hope you can open the browser's source because I think it could be improved. Or I'll try to write my own browser and try to replace official browser by good functions. ;)

Sorry if it's been suggested before or a WIP (I'm too lazy too look through all 8 pages)

Would it be possible to create a form in the browser such as a Settings menu where users could modify each of the values for the vcmp_config.txt options? e.g textboxes, check boxes, drop menus etc for setting values. maybe even color pickers for the hex related elements.

It's really nice by the way ;)

There are already some settings that you can edit by the Launcher :P (Go to: settings -> VC:MP Settings)
I've added them just for testing, and later I will add all of them or the mostly possible at least.

His browser had a lot of bugs, so better stay away from it. Use the official one or ysc's.

Yes, who cares. Like I said, the official browser you get with the client works so use that instead.
